In what ways has diabetes positively influenced your life?
Diabetes has forced me to have a more regimented life when it comes to diet and exercise. I probably wouldn’t be as disciplined without it. People tell me I look 10 years younger than my 58 years. I think a lot of that is attributed to how I take care of myself.

It’s made me mentally tougher. When someone said “you can’t do that”, my response became “oh yeah? watch me.”

For me it's hard to find positive ways considering the many doctor appointments and physical effects that I must deal ith on a daily basis. What is positive are many people i have met that have shared words of encourgement and their journey of living with diabetes. For that I am grateful.

In what ways has diabetes positively influenced your life?
I've become much more innovative with problem solving skills. I've learned to improvise in so many situations (e.g., when my pump ran dry and I had forgotten extra supplies, I realized that I had an extra 10 units in the tubing- I figured out how to force inject that to get an extra 10-12 hours, etc.) This improvising skill has spilled over into many other areas of my life. I don't think I'd be as flexible if I wasn't forced to "figure it out" because of my T1D.

My eating habits improved 100%. I didn’t know a starch from a free vegetable in terms of carbs. My irritable bowel problems disappeared because I started eating breakfast and cut out carbonated colas. That alone was worth it.

How often does diabetes disrupt your sleep?
Almost every night, my sleep is interrupted, at least 9 times out of 10 nights. My BG drops and the T:slim pumps insulin on the down slide until I get to 70 before it stops. It is, in my opinion, a flaw in the algorithm. I don't understand why the algorithm can see the continuous drop in BG. I have numerous screen captures of this situation. I have gotten into the habit of checking my BG right at bed time. Even taking some carbs at bedtime doesn't prohibit lows at night. It is literally exhausting.

Lows wake me up. The CGM alarm system kicks in if my body doesn’t. I will shut the alarm system off after I’ve treated the low because gastroparesis slows absorption and that alarm can continue needlessly for another hour until the is sufficiently corrected.

I take a hand full of supplement three times daily:
Alpa Lopic Acid, B12, C-time release, Co-Q-10, D3, Lutein, Super B Complex, Multivitamins and minerals. If it wasn’t for Diabetes, I would be considered in good shape for being 78 years old. My last A1C was 6.1 and always in satisfactory range.

        B1
        B2
        B6
        B9
In the winter, I take Quercetin with Bromelain for two weeks or so. I eat seafood/fish three times I week so I dont take zinc often. When I do add zinc then I also add copper to balance.
I try to tailor my supplements based on what I dont eat/or deficiency. I prefer to get nutrients from whole, organic foods.

I have been taking omega 3, vitamin D and chewable vitamin C. Have stoped all this summer as I realized that I was getting false high glucose readings most likely due to the chewable 1000 mg Vit C daily intake. Now my readings are much more controlled and in range and will discuss vitamins in general with my endocrinologist when I see him next month. If he suggests they are not necessary, as I have a healthy diet and try to eat foods rich in healthy nutrients, I will not resume taking any vitamins.

I am good about taking Vit D and Biotin (because, hair growth!)…but there are others that sit in the drawer, ignored and forgotten! I should be taking my multi and turmeric more consistently.

Until 6 weeks ago, I took no supplements. But now after dry-eye syndrome after cataract surgery, I’m taking Fish Oil with Vitamin D.
