In what ways has diabetes positively influenced your life?
D.R.A.W. It’s a theme I’ve used in public speaking. D is for discipline; a concept some people have to join the army to learn. R is for reward. You must reward yourself for things well done. A is for awareness. Awareness of yourself and others keeps you alive. W is for wonderment. Believing or thinking about things bigger than yourself. ル˖ ♡ ₍ ᐢ..ᐢ ₎ 📍 ࣪ . >

I've become much more innovative with problem solving skills. I've learned to improvise in so many situations (e.g., when my pump ran dry and I had forgotten extra supplies, I realized that I had an extra 10 units in the tubing- I figured out how to force inject that to get an extra 10-12 hours, etc.) This improvising skill has spilled over into many other areas of my life. I don't think I'd be as flexible if I wasn't forced to "figure it out" because of my T1D.

In what ways has diabetes positively influenced your life?
Diabetes has forced me to have a more regimented life when it comes to diet and exercise. I probably wouldn’t be as disciplined without it. People tell me I look 10 years younger than my 58 years. I think a lot of that is attributed to how I take care of myself.

I was diagnosed with Celiac disease back around 2009 (that’s a guess, I don’t remember exactly) by my primary care, general practitioner. He told me that I tested positive for celiac disease and told me not to eat foods with gluten. He probably gave me a pamphlet, and it was all person research from there. I read articles about celiac disease and figured out what I could and could not eat. It’s been a long and lonely journey. My diet is mostly of a mediteranean type. Most things I buy are labeled “gluten free”, or I know they are gluten free from experience and research. I eat a lot of fresh vegetables and fruits, greek yogurts, etc. I avoid restaurants as much as possible.

I reject all the ‘fad’/popular diets. I’ve always eaten a well-balanced meal of all the food groups (thanks to my mother :). I did consult with my endo when I became his patient 44 years ago and gave my balanced diet his blessing. I see no reason to follow the fad diet plans even if they are healthy (like the Mediterranean). I glean the good points from a popular diet plan and incorporate them into my standard diet.

My endocrinologist referred me to a gastroenterologist for testing for celiac after a blood test came back showing markers. After an endoscopy I was officially diagnosed with celiac disease and spoke with a nutritionist/dietician about how to start a gluten free diet.

Gluten free diet was prescribed by a gastroenterologist and then I met with a nutritionist to learn more about it.

I had Celiac disease before diabetes. I never spoke to endo about it, I just continued doing what I always did.
