I’ve been on insulin pump therapy for 35 years, but before that I took upwards of 9 injections a day. Approx 25 units per day. 15 long lasting in am/pm. Then depending on food and snacks 10-15 units fast acting and corrections also.
Just switched back to pump. Was on MDI for three years. Dosed twice for basal insulin. Worked better for me. Then for meals and corrections. Got to be a pain. Have a tandem pump and so far so good. Not crazy about tubing but Omnipod didn’t work for me.
After several years on the pump, last year on shots did my basal in the AM, my bolus 6-7 times a day (1 real meal, maybe a snack): 1-2 units per. My a1C was 5.3 and 5.2. Back to pumping a much easier a1C 5.4-5.7.
I have 4 injections planned, may need some correction doses some days
I only use MDI when off the pump. When that happens, I inject anywhere from 3 to 6 times a day depending on carb intake and BG patterns.

Here’s another way to think about these responses. Of the 22% who are MDI, half take 5 or 6 injections daily.

Regular and NPH. NPH 2 times per day, Regular usually 3 to 4 times per day.
