TCOYD, as they are Doctors living with T1D. Their video's are informative and funny, I like T1D to 100, and Joanne Milo, as she too lives with T1D and understands what aging with T1D is like, and Tom from Type One Talks, as his video's are entertaining and informative.

I am going to be general rather than specific (to protect the innocent 😏 ). I enjoy the researchers and the individuals living and making a good life of T1D. I loathe following what insurance companies, private equity, investment bankers, credit default swappers, derivative managers, mergers & acquisition operatives are doing (legally, and encouraged by) to the American health care system.

Have you ever worked with a professional (outside your T1D healthcare team) to review your diabetes data, adjust settings, and insulin ratios?
Early on in my diagnosis, I went to a diabetes camp. I had just started insulin and nothing was dialed in yet. It was really nice to have so much time with so many knowledgeable people. I think it would have taken quite a while to put things together with just me and my team.

How many times a week do you exercise?
Define exercise: I walk, do yoga, mow a corner lot at home, garden, vacuum, take care of a toddler from 9:30 am until 4:30pm twice per week, do Core exercises for women over 50 (I’m 68). Do I go to the gym and perform a regimen? No. But I think I get plenty of exercise.

How many times a week do you exercise?
My dog and I hike 4 miles a day (2 early am and then 2 in the pm). Then I also do 30 minutes of yoga and 30 minutes of TaiChi 6 days a week.

I am not sure. Do you consider a pump trainer outside your healthcare team? She wasn’t my usual go to and haven’t spoken to her since I got set up and dialed in. Despite that, most pump setting changes I do myself.

If you consider referring to Gary Scheiner and John Walsh's books - then no. But those two gave me the confidence to adjust settings and since I am a math/data nerd to trust my ability to interpret data.

I got spoiled for about 12 years while living in San Diego – the TCOYD flagship annual conference. Up-to-date info, great sharing of hacks and tips, judgment free place to question “advice/directions” from your own endo’s (and endorks) and the swag was great. Face-to-face with vendors, chances to meet with real-life users of the tech.
When I moved to Portland OR I went to an ADA Expo and left within 20 minutes. It was all geared to the needs of T2D (and yeah, they have needs and questions) but nothing for T1D – not even device reps etc.
I decided to try to get a TCOYD conference in my area. Got an estimated budget (TCOYD was very helpful) and started to plan how I could get large local donors. I knew I had to get the local ADA and HDRF orgs to back me in my endeavor. I wasn’t looking for $$, but their blessing so I could get the word out to the Endo’s in the area. Sadly, the local ADA and JDRF didn’t respond to my calls, letters or emails. I had to give up the idea.
Once the annual TCOYD’s are back, I’ll save up and go to San Diego (hopefully old friends will let me crash at their house!)

Hey Kristina. I think TCOYD in San Diego is back in person this summer. Aug 16-18th.

TCOYD is the best! The ONE conference in person was back on starting last year. Try the website! I would go, but I have a wedding to attend around that time.

I attend the University of Colorado, Barbara Davies Center’s annual Keystone conference in July. It’s for health care providers (I’m a RN, CDCES specializing in T1D care, with T1D myself). It’s brings a variety of diabetes experts representing different sectors (research, government, industry and providers) from all over the world to an intimate, beautiful setting. The information is practical and really helpful. Please let your providers know about it!
