  I imagine there are some of us here who already know this, but for the others who who were diagnosed 50 years ago or more, did you know there's a Facebook group for us? It's called (not surprisingly) "Type 1 Diabetics for 50years+"

  I request a backup insulin pump when I travel internationally. I have had so few issues with my Tandem pump, I rarely give it a second thought. But I do pack extra pump supplies, CGM supplies, insulin, and a syringe or two.

  No one has asked me to remove it (who would do that?). If it needs to be removed according to the manufacturer's guidelines, I remove it. Then I contact the manufacturer and tell them I had to remove it for a medical procedure and they replace it for me. Easy-peasy.

  I’m not sure why zero was not an option. I knew when I went to the doctor I had it. Ignored the symptoms until I dropped 10 lbs without trying and couldn’t bury my head in the sand anymore. Are a big piece of chocolate cake before I went because I figured that’s the last time I would be able to. Luckily, I am in control and can still have desserts every once in a while.

  We didn't check my A1c to diagnose; we checked postprandial blood glucose. Had to hold up the reagent test strip to the color code on the Chemstrips container. Anybody else remember those old days? (1980s.) BG was around 240. Pretty obvious I had T1D.

  I technically received accommodations, but still received a lot of judgment and discouragement from using those accommodations. In seventh grade, I had to leave five minutes early before lunch to go to the nurse to have my blood sugar taken (I had just been diagnosed and wasn't comfortable doing it myself), and my seventh grade history teacher would literally stop what he was doing to glare at me as I left the room...

  @Lawrence S. - 504 refers to Section 504 of a government act that declared diabetes a disability. This allows students to have a 504 Plan that allows for them to do thinks like take breaks, eat a snack, or take insulin when needed while in school.

  I was in school in the 60s and 70s, so 'accommodations' didn't exist. After several hospitalizations in 7th grade, I was allowed to go to my locker outside of allowed time period to eat a snack. Not really an 'accommodation'. No food or drinks in class in my school years, so Lifesavers were my low treatment choice

  I fix and build computers and the memory of the computer gets cleared from strong magnetic waves. I went on a cruise and had to go through security . The security person stated that he was impressed with my knowledge and paperwork I had with me.

  I was in school some years ago but my mother would bring juice placed in the office. The nurse was only at the school for a very short time during the day and her office was locked when she was not there. The juice was either orange or apple juice.

  I have no children with T1, T1 1/2 or T2 Diabetes. Only I have Diabetes.

  I hate this part of the traveling process and I’ve been discriminated against by a TSA agent when I expressed my concern. The director I spoke to afterward was very empathetic, though.

  TSA Pre-check is great because the scanner is just a metal detector. No need to remove the pump or CGM. I always declare both devices and TSA pats me down every time. I take no chances on the full-body scanner scrambling the devices.

  Be patient and learn as much as you can about how to take care of yourself.

  I would let the person/people know that you can live a long, happy, healthy life with diabetes as long as you keep your blood sugars controlled. That is the key! It may take some time to get regulated, but once you do, stay that way. It's the best thing for you and you'll feel so much better if you do. Also, don't fret over the occasional high or low blood sugar. They will happen. It's just part of life with diabetes.

  I've had implanted devices before the diagnosis of diabetes due to epilepsy and have had to have a pat down. I haven't walked through the metal detector due to it interfering with a responsive neurostimulator for almost a decade.
