  I did not have a steroid prescription, per se. Rather, I had steroid injections as part of orthopedic treatments. They caused significant issues with my glucose management and did little to provide relief for he original orthopedic issue.

  I no longer fly. But when I did i carried medical supplies and extra food as carry on. Today, whether running errands on foot or by bus or taxi, I ALWAYS carry Dexcom, One Touch meter, sugar cubes, prefilled insulin syringes with me in backpack, pockets of pants and/or backpack. Let recent SW Airlines lost luggage snafu be a warning.

  Participated in a Diabetes Education online group through the Clemson University Coop Health Extension. It was great and it meant that we had weekly meetings over a few months, so more meetings than in a normal year.

  I haven't seen a CDE-ES since I was diagnosed 36 years ago. My endocrinology FNP is trying to get me in with a special clinic in my area just for insulin pump patients; I'm hopeful about that.

  Usually all T1D supplies and medications go with me on my carryon. Can't risk freezing in cargo holds or lost luggage. Extra week of test strips, etc. sometimes I will pack in checked baggage, but seldom.

  I actually pack all diabetes supplies in a SEPARATE carry on, because most airlines will allow a medical bag that is not counted as THE carry on typically allowed for passengers.

  I see an endo 3x/yr but would like to see a CDCES to have a more indepth review of insulin and carb and TIR. They are not easy, insurance wise to get into.

  Medicare can be tricky. There is required and then recommended or suggested. I only comply with 90 day endo visit. Some clinics misleadingly say education is needed but certainly is not required. Unless a patient is non-compliant or incapable of managing T1. Then an office/clinic can recommend education.

  I’ve had 3 total when first diagnosed 16 yrs ago. It wasn’t good. Then when hospitalized for kidney stone surgery they sent one in to my room, so captured. A very nice person, but knew very little about type 1 and pumps or CGM. It was a shame. She wrote down all my go to info places and a couple forums online. I do wonder how some get the job. This was Minneapolis/st Paul area, not remote area. And she wanted to know about the info. Just not part of her job requirement. 10 yrs ago, but I don’t have time for it. And of course I know there are good educators out there who are crucial to peoples care!

  I am a RN, MSN, CDCES myself and when I need to see one, I consult one of my fellow RN, CDCES who also live with T1D themselves. So no formal appointments within the medical system with a CDCES fir "diabetes education". However, the endocrine NP I see as a provider is a CDCES.

  A CDE, or CDCES, cannot write RX orders unless they are also a mid-level practitioner such as a PA or NP. And not all NPs or PAs are certified as diabetes care and education specialists (CDCES).

  I was very young, so I don't know for sure. I don't think I was though, because my mother recognized the signs - - excessive thirst and urination - - and took me to the doctor's office to get checked.

  Your story is heartbreaking and infuriating. I'm sorry you went through this. My mentor was diagnosed at 50 and had a similar experience. I was 42. So many people don't believe me when I tell them how many endocrinologists fail us as T1Ds because they don't understand it as an autoimmune disease that can strike at any age.

  BG 742, lots of urination but no nausea or chest pains. Not sure they could/knew to test for ketoacidosis in 1966.

  When I was diagnosed in 1963, I was admitted to the hospital that evening. I was unbelievably thirsty and peed almost continuously. At some point that night I went into a hyperglycemic coma and woke up the next day when they had brought my glucose level down and reversed the DKA.

  Yes, dehydration makes getting an IV in difficult (and my veins like to hide anyway). But... O, AnitaS! Ouch! I'm sorry they had to cut you open! I was lucky that they eventually succeeded. I applaud the determined nurses for that.

  I understand how the dehydration caused the nurses to have a hard time finding a vein to put an IV in. My doctors had to cut me open to stick an IV in me.

  Yes, I had DKA and lapsed into a coma for a day at the hospital.
