Introduction and Objective: Some musculoskeletal conditions are more common in individuals with T1D. This study evaluates the lifetime prevalence of eight musculoskeletal conditions in people with T1D, their cumulative burden, and demographic/clinical factors associated with high burden.
Methods: Participants (N=9,412) were included from the T1D Exchange Registry, an online study of adults with T1D and caregivers of children with T1D, who completed a questionnaire in 2023 or 2024. Participants reported whether they had ever been treated for or diagnosed with eight musculoskeletal conditions. Lifetime prevalence was calculated as the percentage of participants who responded “yes”. A cumulative burden score summed the number of conditions per participant. A logistic regression model assessed if high musculoskeletal burden (≥2 conditions) was associated with demographic/clinical factors.
Results: Lifetime prevalence varied by condition; all were more prevalent among females, and older age groups (Fig 1). Twenty percent of participants had a high burden score. High musculoskeletal burden was independently associated with longer diabetes duration (40+ years vs <10 years-Ref, OR 6.91, 95% CI 5.60, 8.59), higher BMI (BMI >=40 vs Ref-BMI 18.5-24, OR 2.79, 95% CI 2.07, 3.74), and other factors.
Conclusion: Given high prevalence in some age/sex groups, closer screening and/or prevention research should be considered.
