  A lot of doctors do not know much about potential diabetes complications. We (type 1s) are covered for maybe a week in their curriculum, and technology and information changes often. It's up to each of us as individuals to read up on it and bring that information to a doctor. If that doctor hasn't read about the newer tech or diets that may help.. a second opinion can be very helpful. (as can all the forums mentioned by many diabetics in this group).

  You are your own best clinician.....if your health care person doesn't support your treatment...find one that does.

  Take it seriously but don't try to be perfect. Try to make life as normal as possible. The main difference with T1 folks and non-diabetics is that we have to inject our insulin. And speaking of insulin, just be thankful we have it so we can keep on keeping on.

  For me, getting used to and accepting my 'new' life as a T1D patient was mentally exhausting. Be kind to yourself and give it some time, eventually what seems incredibly daunting will become routine.

  Get a pump and Dexcom as soon as possible to make the disease so much easier on yourself.

  Be a simple scientist and keep track of the variable in your daily life: everything you put into your body, along with stressors/ illness and see if /how they affect your BG. Every body is different and it is good to know how to deal with yours specifically.

  I was diagnosed in 1951 at the age of 6. I am now 78 and have had no serious complications of diabetes. It was difficult to know glucose level in the early years before CGM. Obtain a CGM, such as DexCom as soon as possible and work hard to keep glucose levels in range. There is hope!

  Be kind to yourself, don't be self-critical, it gets easier. You'll find out all the things that make you high and low over time. Many of them (for example caffeine and protein) are counter-intuitive. You'll get there

  The only time that I've changed my insulin to carb ratio was when I lost about 65lbs and had been exercising regularly for about a year. I went from 1:10 to 1:12.

  It seems overly complex to begin with but T1D is manageable. Don't let the days when control seems chaotic get you down and don't let the good days make you overly confident. Working with your professionals, it really is doable.

  How often do you exercise? Share more in the comments about your exercise routine.
  My answer needs explaining. I am 84, with 78 years of T1D and a lot of neuropathy. Vacuuming a few rooms in my house is very exerting. That is exercise. Walking 20 minutes outdoors is exercise. Bathing and dressing is exercise. I cannot do all of these things in the same day. If these examples can be considered as exercise, I exercise every day,.
