  Mayo Clinic, where my endo resides, has very tight schedules. My endo tells me when her calendar “opens” for my next visit. I mark it on my calendar and call that very day. Crazy I know! 🤷‍♀️

  I answered "Other". A ketogenic diet generally implies the consumption of between 20 to 50 grams of carbohydrate per day. I have been a Type 1 diabetic since 1976. While I have considerably reduced my daily carbohydrate-intake, I have never gone as low as 50 carb grams/day. After reading Dr Richard Bernstein's Diabetes Solution over 20 years ago, I became "Carb-aware". Reading that book motivated me to see how many carbs per day I was consuming and to reduce them to a level I could sustain while improving my overall diabetes control. Initially, I was able to handle 120 carb grams/day but, as I've aged, I now limit myself to no more than 100 carb grams/day. By doing this, I've been able to keep my A1c in the low 6's which is my goal. My lowest A1c was a 5.8.

  I don't name it, and I do "cheat," but I have no choice but to avoid as many carbs as possible.

  I dabbled in Keto for several years and then decided I wanted more complex carbs. Plus, my hubby quit eating dairy. So, now I eat veggies, fruit, whole grains and beans, some fish and poultry. I find that the protein makes me high later, whereas the beans or vegetarian meals, do not. So, not extreme low carb, but around 100 carbs a day, dinner being the most carb-heavy.

  I eat about 30 grams of carbohydrate three times daily. I've had T1D for about 46 years and eaten this way for about 30 years. Mostly lower glycemic with lots of vegetables and a moderate amount of protein.

  I have not found any other way to have tight control on blood sugar levels.

  No, just a mental note, I usually rotate through different areas and zig zag back and forth from one side to another. And I can usually see a small dot where my site is healing for about 2 weeks so that helps me not repeat a site/area.

  But long before I’d heard of it or knew it had a name - started around 2000 when it seemed the ‘easiest’ way to deal with with insulin and stay in range.

  Same 60 years Low Carb, High Protein and AVOID Ketones so I don't consider it Keto Diet. Oh, and I Avoid Hypoglycemia as it is the Big Spoiler of A1c

  Ditto the road map on my abdomen. I’ve tried my sides but usually pull them out when I go to the bathroom. Haven’t tried thighs but feel that spot would be the same problem.

Background

The T1D Exchange is a nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating therapies and improving care for individuals with type 1 diabetes. Its Quality Improvement Collaborative (T1DX-QI) comprises a network of 62 adult and pediatric diabetes centers (Figure 1), which collectively care for more than 250 000 people with diabetes (PWD). The T1DX-QI harnesses real-world data from its centers to evaluate and improve the quality of care delivered nationally to PWD, and its annual T1DX-QI Learning Session highlights the depth and breadth of this work
