T1D EXCHANGE BIOBANK
WHAT IS IT?
T1D Exchange Biobank is a collection of biological samples linked to participant medical data from 2,200 individuals living with type 1 diabetes. Our Biobank unifies samples and data from eight different clinical studies related to type 1 diabetes.
WHY BUILD IT?
Many researchers cannot develop their own collections due to funding, time, and staff constraints. By providing this resource, T1D Exchange can help scientists accelerate discovery and identify therapeutic leads involved in the onset and progression of disease.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The Biobank experience is like shopping online. Users:
- Register for an account
- Browse the sample collection
- Add samples to a shopping cart
- Submit an online Sample Request form
- Wait for approval
- Receive samples, packed to specifications
Note: Researchers/institutions must make findings involving samples available to others through timely publication in accessible, peer-reviewed journals, and acknowledge T1D Exchange in all communications.
Researchers May Have Uncovered Stages of Beta Cell Destruction in Type 1 Diabetes
Participants in the T1D Exchange Clinic Network retained the ability to secrete an incompletely processed form of insulin, even when their diabetes was longstanding. The results, generated in part from T1D Exchange Biobank data and samples, suggest a story of how type 1 diabetes might progress.
